BRAZIL

Tobacco Control Program

Was invited to participate in Souza Cruz (Brazilian BAT subsidiary) "stakeholder dialogue." One of Souza Cruz's main proposals there was a "youth smoking prevention program". INCA's general director wrote a letter of refusal, noting that he couldn't see any common interest between INCA and the tobacco industry.

TURKEY • Ministry of Education Stopped program. In 2000, the Faculty of Education at Bosphorus University, one of the oldest universities of Istanbul established by Americans previously under the name of Robert College, announced the start of a project in schools entitled "The Power is
Yours". The newspapers articles gave all the prestige to Philip Morris for donating $100,000 to finance the project. The project was about teaching students on the process of decision making, without mentioning smoking. More info

USA - CA • California Board of Education and Department of Justice When Philip Morris sent "Kids don't smoke" bookcovers to schools in California, wrote a joint memo to all schools in the state instructing them to return or trash the bookcovers, pointing out that their distribution was just a way for PM to promote it's corporate identity among children.
